At the April 14th Fairfield Area School District (FASD) board study session, district leaders discussed expanding special education services to meet rising student needs. Over 70 students have been evaluated for support this school year—a big number for a district with just 876 students.
Currently, 148 students receive special education services, up from 142 last year. The district recently added a board-certified behavior analyst and plans to open a new autism support classroom at the middle school in 2025-26.
Fairfield partners with nearby districts for specialized programs and has 16 students placed in outside institutions. Several of those students are expected to return next year, which will help reduce costs. Plans to hire a school psychologist and in-house speech therapists aim to further cut expenses.
They also reported over 7,100 nurse’s office visits this year, helping identify student health patterns and needs.
The next school board meeting is set for April 28 at 7 p.m. and can always be streamed on their YouTube page
